N’Golo Kante has described winning the PFA player of the year award as a “special moment” for the Chelsea midfielder.

The Blues signed the France international in a £30m deal from Leicester City in the 2016 summer transfer window after Kante helped the Foxes to win the Premier League title in 2015-16.

The 26-year-old wasted no time helping to transform Chelsea into a formidable force in the Premier League once again despite finishing in tenth place during Leicester’s title-winning campaign.

Indeed, Antonio Conte’s men won the Premier League crown with two games to spare as Kante scored his only top-flight goal in a 4-0 victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge back in October 2016.

Kante’s dominant midfield performance earned him the PFA player of the year award as the France international celebrated winning back-to-back Premier League titles with different clubs.

And the Chelsea star admitted that it was a big moment in his career to be recognised alongside some true Premier League greats.

“It was a special experience,” Kante told Chelsea’s magazine.

“To add my name to the list of winners was a big honour. When you see the other winners, there are a lot of big players. I started as a boy and worked for a long time to become a professional, so to add my name to a list with those kinds of players was really, really good for me.

“To do a speech was a little bit difficult, in front of everyone – the writers, the players and to do that in English was a little bit more difficult, but I tried to choose simple words and thank everyone.”

Kante scored one goal and made one assist in 37 appearances in the Premier League under Conte last term.

The Blues are in fourth place in the Premier League table following a 1-0 loss to leaders Manchester City before the international break.
