Pat Nevin has admitted that watching Chelsea’s erratic defensive performances has been uncomfortable in recent weeks.

The defending Premier League champions started a sticky run of form with a 1-0 loss to leaders Manchester City last month after ex Blues midfielder Kevin De Bruyne scored a second-half winner at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea returned from the international break with a 2-1 loss to the Premier League’s basement club Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park following Cesar Azpilicueta’s own goal and Wilfried Zaha’s first-half winner.

The Blues squandered a lead to draw 3-3 with AS Roma in the Champions League last week to remain unbeaten in Europe despite an uncharacteristically uncertain defensive performance from Conte’s side.

Chelsea conceded their seventh and eighth goals in four games when Watford scored either side of half-time at Stamford Bridge on Saturday before Michy Batshuayi and Cesar Azpilicueta reversed the deficit in a 4-2 win.

Former Blues winger Nevin admitted that Chelsea have made for uncomfortable viewing for the club’s supporters given some of their uncertain defending.

“I still think most Chelsea fans have the same feeling, it has not been comfortable since the Atletico Madrid away game and there have been too many goals lost in that period to be relaxed,” Nevin told Chelsea’s website.

Chelsea finished with the third best defensive record in the Premier League last season after winning the title with two games to spare in Conte’s first season in charge at Stamford Bridge.
