Graeme Souness has told Chelsea and Manchester United that they simply need to keep themselves in the hunt for the title if they want to catch Manchester City this season.

Pep Guardiola’s men have been the standout team in the Premier League this term and they are currently leading the way at the top of the table.

Manchester City are currently five points clear of Manchester United in the table after 10 games of the new campaign.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are down in fourth place and find themselves nine points behind the leaders.

Tottenham were beaten 1-0 by Manchester United last weekend to deal a blow to Spurs’ title hopes.

However, Souness believes that Manchester City’s challengers simply need to stay close to the leaders because he feels that Guardiola’s men are bound to slip up at some stage.

Speaking on Sky Sports on Saturday, Souness said: “Chelsea, Man United and Tottenham have to stay within touching distance of Man City.

“Man City will slip up. When they do, you’re waiting for that reaction if you’re in the chasing pack.

“You want to see how the Man City players will react to a punch on the nose. You’ve got to be ready to capitalise on that.”

Manchester United travel to Chelsea in their crunch Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils, who finished in sixth place last term, were thrashed 4-0 by the Blues at Stamford Bridge last season in the Premier League.

Chelsea, meanwhile, were crowned champions in their first season under Antonio Conte.
