Ray Wilkins has admitted that he is still annoyed about Chelsea’s decision to sell Nemanja Matic to Manchester United in the summer transfer window.

Antonio Conte opted to let the Serbian midfielder leave Stamford Bridge and sign for Chelsea’s Premier League rivals in the summer as the Blues brought in holding midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco.

Matic has made an instant impact at Manchester United after slotting straight into the first team at Old Trafford and helping the Red Devils to make a solid start to the new campaign.

Indeed, Matic’s displays have helped Manchester United win six of their opening seven games of the new season to leave them second in the table and level on points with leaders Manchester City.

Chelsea suffered a potential injury blow over the weekend when it emerged that N’Golo Kante had picked up an injury while on international duty with France.

And former Chelsea coach Wilkins believes that the situation highlights what a mistake the Blues have made by opting to sell Matic to their domestic rivals.

Speaking to Sky Sports News on Monday morning, Wilkins said: “I’m annoyed he [Matic] has been allowed to leave Stamford Bridge.

“Kante has injured himself the other night with his thigh, we don’t know if he will be playing at the weekend.

“Matic for me is the best holding midfield player, one of the best in the world anyway. I’m very sad that he’s left.”

Chelsea are currently preparing for their Premier League trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday as they look to bounce back from their 1-0 defeat by Manchester City before the international break.
