Antonio Conte warned Chelsea must spend big in January
Chris Sutton believes that Chelsea need to make a number of new signings in the January transfer window
Chris Sutton has warned Antonio Conte that Chelsea will need to spend big in the January transfer window to rescue their season.
The west London side have suffered something of a significant dip in form in recent weeks in what has been a mixed start to the new campaign for the Blues.
Chelsea have lost their last two games in the Premier League to leave them in fifth place in the table and nine points behind leaders Manchester City.
The Blues were also held to a 3-3 draw by Roma at Stamford Bridge in the Champions League on Wednesday night as they dropped their first points of the season in Europe.
Conte brought in six new players in the summer transfer window but were also criticised for their decision to let certain stars leave the club, such as Nemanja Matic.
And former Chelsea star Sutton believes that the Blues will have to significantly bolster their squad in the new year.
Speaking to the Daily Star, Sutton said: “The issue is he hasn’t spent already.
“It would be logical for him to spend in January but will they still be in Europe then? I think so.
“But domestically, it may be all a little bit too late. He can only focus on what’s in front of him.
“January will be important for Chelsea.”
Chelsea will aim to get back to winning ways in the Premier League on Saturday lunchtime when they host Watford at Stamford Bridge.
The west London side won the title in Antonio Conte’s first season at the club last term.
