Antonio Conte warned about Alvaro Morata ahead of Chelsea v Roma
Chelsea legend Pat Nevin believes Antonio Conte should resist the temptation to rush Alvaro Morata back into the Blues team
Pat Nevin has warned Antonio Conte about rushing back Alvaro Morata into the Chelsea team for the visit of AS Roma on Wednesday night.
The Spain international suffered a hamstring problem during Chelsea’s 1-0 loss to Manchester City at Stamford Bridge in their last Premier League game before the international break.
Morata was initially rumoured to be sidelined for six weeks but the Chelsea summer signing could return to Conte’s starting line-up for their Champions League clash at Stamford Bridge.
The 24-year-old was sidelined for Chelsea’s 2-1 loss to the Premier League’s basement club Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon.
The Spanish forward has scored six goals in seven games in the Premier League to make an effortless transition to the English top flight from La Liga.
Morata opened his Champions League account in a Chelsea shirt with a superb equaliser in the west London side’s 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid in the Spanish capital.
Former Chelsea winger Nevin doesn’t want Conte to risk Morata’s long-term fitness by rushing the Spanish centre-forward back into the Blues team.
“Will he be fully fit?” Nevin told Irish radio station Newstalk. “You don’t want to rush him back. You can’t take too many chances.”
Chelsea signed Morata in a £58m deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid in the summer transfer window ahead of Diego Costa’s return to Atletico Madrid.
