Eden Hazard rates his chances of winning Ballon d’Or with Chelsea
Chelsea star Eden Hazard explains why he doesn't expect to win the Ballon d'Or this year
Eden Hazard has claimed that he has only been nominated for the Ballon d’Or because he players for Chelsea, and says he has “no chance” of winning the award.
The Belgian playmaker has been named on the 30-man shortlist for the prestigious individual accolade after having helped Chelsea to win the Premier League title last season.
Hazard was crowned as Chelsea’s player of the season last term as he fired in 16 goals to help the west London side win back the title in Antonio Conte’s first campaign in charge.
But the 26-year-old feels that he has no chance of winning the award this time around, although he does hope to have another chance in the coming years.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Hazard said: “I have no chance [of winning].
“I think a lot of players are better than me but I am happy to be in the last 30 players. I know I am on this list because I play for Chelsea and because I play with great team-mates. They help me every week to be on this list.
“I don’t know if in the future I can have the chance to win the Ballon d’Or but it is not my objective now. My objective is to play and to enjoy myself on the pitch.
“For the last 10 years, it has always been Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, but Neymar is coming and a couple of others so we will see when Messi and Ronaldo stop playing, maybe we have a better chance but for the moment, it is not in my head.
“We have more chance to win the Ballon d’Or if we win everything. I think this year, Ronaldo deserved it because he won with Portugal, he won the Champions League, he won La Liga. If one day I want to win, I just have to win everything. Nice and simple!”
Hazard will be expecting to feature for Chelsea when the Blues return to Champions League action on Wednesday night with a crunch clash against Roma at Stamford Bridge.
The west London side have been in fine form in Europe’s elite club competition so far this season, winning both of their opening games against Qarabag and Atletico Madrid.
Chelsea are aiming to defend the Premier League title this season after winning the top-flight crown for the second time in three years last term.
