Garth Crooks: What I like about Liverpool FC starlet is he can defend
The Spurs legend heaps praise on Liverpool's versatile defender Joe Gomez for his performance against Manchester United
Garth Crooks has admitted that he is a big fan of Liverpool defender Joe Gomez.
The England international started at right-back for the visit of Manchester United in the Premier League this weekend.
Gomez acquitted himself well against the Manchester United’s player of the month Anthony Martial during Liverpool’s goalless draw with Manchester United.
The 21-year-old managed to keep France international Martial under wraps as well as providing a threat going forward from left-back.
Gomez made his first start under Klopp in a 1-0 win against Crystal Palace following a prolonged spell on the sidelines back in August.
The England Under-21 international has made one assist in six Premier League appearances this term to establish himself as a first-team regular in the absence of Nathaniel Clyne.
Former Spurs forward Crooks lavished praise on Gomez for his assured performance in the Liverpool team against their bitter rivals Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
“Liverpool did their best to make a game of it and none more so than the impressive Joe Gomez,” Crooks told BBC Sport.
“This is a young, versatile English player who can play as a full-back or in central defence.
“What I like about him is he can actually defend, which is a rare quality in Liverpool’s defence these days.
“He saw off Anthony Martial and later gave Marcus Rashford something to think about in a game in which Liverpool were allowed to dominate the play.”
Gomez moved to Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in a £5m deal under Klopp’s predecessor Brendan Rodgers.
The Liverpool star made a promising start to the 2015-16 season before he suffered a serious knee injury before he could make his first appearance under Rodgers’ replacement Klopp.
