Gary Neville has claimed that Jose Mourinho was looking to silence the “circling vultures” after the Manchester United boss made a “shush” gesture following Saturday’s 1-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Red Devils welcomed Spurs to Old Trafford in the top of the table clash as the 20-time English champions looked to end a two-game winless run and end their mini crisis in the Premier League.

Manchester United were criticised for their negative performance in a goalless draw with Liverpool at Anfield earlier this month as Mourinho’s men adopted a negative approach.

The Red Devils lost 2-1 to promoted side Huddersfield Town at John Smith’s Stadium to leave Manchester United five points behind current leaders Manchester City.

Mourinho’s side were criticised for an unexciting performance against Spurs at the weekend but substitute Anthony Martial scored an 81st-minute winner to secure a 1-0 win for the hosts.

Manchester United boss Mourinho appeared to shush the club’s critics after the final whistle.

Former Red Devils defender Neville attempted to explain the meaning behind the Portuguese coach’s gesture on the Old Trafford touchline.

“At the end of the game he put the finger to his mouth. That was him saying to be quiet,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“He knows what he is doing. The vultures were circling and he’s been here before and he’s seen that. It was a big moment for him.”

Manchester United won the League Cup and the Europa League during their first season under Mourinho.

The Red Devils finished in sixth place in the Premier League table.
