Jamie Redknapp: Man United signing needs time to adapt and develop
The Liverpool legend defends Manchester United summer signing Victor Lindelof
Jamie Redknapp has urged Manchester United to give Victor Lindelof a chance to improve at Old Trafford.
The Sweden international moved to Manchester United in a £30m deal from Portuguese club Benfica in the summer transfer window.
Lindelof endured a tough pre-season campaign and started the Premier League season on the bench for Manchester United.
The 23-year-old has been given a chance to shine in the Champions League after he partnered Chris Smalling at centre-half for victories over Basel and CSKA Moscow.
Jose Mourinho opted to start Lindelof at Huddersfield Town on Saturday afternoon as the promising defender made his full Premier League debut.
However, the summer signing made a mistake for the Terriers’ opening goal to raise concerns about the £30m signing’s ability to adapt to English football.
Former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp is confident Lindelof can replicate Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s transformation at Old Trafford after a difficult start.
“Victor Lindelof must feel at rock bottom after his defensive errors led to both Huddersfield goals,” Redknapp told the Daily Mail.
“He probably feels the manager does not rate him and it is vital that Manchester United coaches work closely with him this week and take him back to basics to restore his confidence.
“Lindelof is only 23 and will feel he has to justify his £30million transfer fee. Like Henrikh Mkhitaryan last season, Lindelof may not yet be ready for the Premier League. He should be given time to adapt and develop.”
Manchester United have still kept seven clean sheets in nine Premier League outings despite falling five points adrift of Manchester City.
The Red Devils also signed Everton striker Romelu Lukaku and Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic in the summer transfer window.
The 20-time English champions haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013.
