Liverpool have suffered a cruel injury blow ahead of the visit of Manchester United after Sadio Mane was ruled out for nine weeks.

The Senegal international was replaced in the 89th minute of his country’s 2-0 win against Cape Verde in their World Cup qualifying campaign on Saturday.

The 24-year-old returned to the Merseyside club this week to be assessed by Liverpool’s medical staff with the visit of Manchester United looming on the horizon.

Liverpool have now confirmed that Mane has suffered a hamstring injury to rule the African forward out of action for the next six weeks.

Mane will be sidelined for Liverpool’s potentially season-defining clash against title contenders Manchester United in Saturday’s early kick-off at Anfield.

Liverpool will also be without the African winger for their games against top-four rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.

Mane has scored three goals in five games in the Premier League this season in what was an impressive start to the campaign before his sending off at Manchester City.

The Reds signed Mane in a £30m deal from Southampton in the 2016 summer transfer window and the Senegalese forward scored 13 times in his debut campaign at Anfield.

Liverpool are in seventh place in the Premier League table.
