Jamie Carragher has pinpointed why Liverpool’s defence is making so many mistakes over the past month.

The Reds back four has come under relentless fire after conceding 12 times in their opening seven games in the 2017-18 Premier League campaign.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has stuck with Joel Matip at centre-half and alternated between Ragnar Klavan and Dejan Lovren alongside the Cameroon defender.

The Merseyside outfit squandered a second-half lead at St James’ Park in their final game before the international break after Philippe Coutinho broke the deadlock with a stunning goal.

However, Jonjo Shelvey’s long ball caught out Lovren and Matip in a high position as Joselu levelled the Premier League clash albeit thanks to a fortuitous deflection.

Liverpool looked to sign Virgil van Dijk in the summer transfer window but Southampton refused to sell their club captain despite the Netherlands international handing in a transfer request.

Former Reds defender Carragher believes Liverpool’s centre-halves are guilty of overplaying at the back and wanting to get involved in the game.

“With this Liverpool team, it becomes like a training session. They have so much of the ball,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“As a defender, you want to be part of the game. You’re coming short, trying to get on the ball.

“When you’re on the ball, you want to be composed. Liverpool can’t switch from composed to the nasty aggressiveness as you need as a defender.”

Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last season with Lovren, Klavan and Matip at centre-half.

The Reds have struggled defensively since Carragher retired back in 2013 under Brendan Rodgers.
