Paul Merson fires blunt warning to Liverpool FC signing
Paul Merson discusses Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's poor start to life at Liverpool FC
Paul Merson has warned Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain that he is lucky to be in the England squad at all following his poor form for Liverpool.
The 24-year-old midfielder signed for the Reds from Arsenal back in August on transfer deadline day but has struggled to break into the first team at Anfield under Jurgen Klopp.
Indeed, the former Arsenal star has only started one game for the Reds in the League Cup defeat by Leicester City.
Oxlade-Chamberlain has been restricted to four substitute appearances from the bench so far this season for Liverpool and he has struggled to make much of an impact for the Merseyside outfit.
And former Arsenal star Merson believes that the midfielder is very lucky to be in the England squad at all following his poor form for the Reds so far this season.
Speaking on Sky Sports News on Friday morning, Merson said: “In my day and age, he wouldn’t even be in the squad.
“That’s the problem now, the squad virtually picks itself. There’s not a huge amount of depth and it is harder to get out of the squad than it is to get in it.”
Oxlade-Chamberlain will be hoping to be involved for Liverpool when the Reds return to Premier League action next weekend with a crunch clash against Manchester United at Anfield.
Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw by Newcastle United in their most recent outing to leave them in seventh place in the Premier League table.
