Jamie Redknapp believes that Liverpool need to make a number of signings in the January transfer window – and not just in defence.

The Reds were heavily linked with a move to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk in the summer but a transfer for the Netherlands star failed to materialise.

Liverpool did make four signings in total ahead of the new season, bringing in Mohamed Salah, Dominic Solanke, Andy Robertson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The Merseyside outfit also agreed a deal with RB Leipzig to sign Naby Keita next summer.

However, former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp still feels that the Merseyside club need a number of new additions, particularly in defence and midfield.

Speaking to Sky Sports News on Friday morning, former Reds star Redknapp said: “He [Jurgen Klopp] certainly needs to improve the defence.

“But he knows that and went after Virgil van Dijk in the summer. They also need a good holding midfielder and an out-and-out goal-scorer.”

Liverpool are preparing to return to Champions League action on Tuesday night when they take on Maribor in their group clash.

The Reds are yet to win any of their opening group stage games after being held to draws against both Sevilla and Spartak Moscow last month.

Liverpool are aiming to challenge for the Premier League title this season after the Reds finished fourth and secured a return to the Champions League last term.
