Robbie Savage sends defensive message to Liverpool FC fans about Jordan Henderson
The ex-Leicester midfielder defends the performances of Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson this season
Robbie Savage has defended Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson after criticism of the England international.
The 26-year-old midfielder has made a decent start to the season in the Premier League following a return of one goal in five appearances.
Henderson’s first top-flight goal of the 2017-18 season came in a thrilling 3-2 win against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday evening.
The Liverpool skipper produced a brilliant performance in the Merseyside club’s 4-2 win against Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim in the playoff round.
Henderson was appointed as Steven Gerrard’s successor as club captain in 2015 under Brendan Rodgers and Klopp stuck with the England international in the leadership role.
Former Leicester City midfielder Savage praised Henderson for his growing influence in the Liverpool team despite some criticism of the Reds captain.
“Jurgen Klopp, who has won the Bundesliga and reached Champions League final has decided to make Jordan Henderson his captain,” Savage told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“He scored the winning goal [at Leicester]. He has had a decent season. He is their leader and their captain.”
Liverpool played out a 1-1 draw with Spartak Moscow in their second Champions League game in Russia on Tuesday night following a 2-2 stalemate with Sevilla in their opening fixture in the group stage.
The Reds finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last season.
