Graeme Souness sends big challenge to Liverpool FC ahead of Man United clash
The Liverpool legend warns Jurgen Klopp that the Reds need to do a lot better ahead of their games against Man United and Tottenham
Graeme Souness has warned Jurgen Klopp that Liverpool need to improve their Premier League performances ahead of the visit of Manchester United in their next top-flight fixture.
The Reds squandered another lead at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon following Philippe Coutinho’s incredible long-range goal in the first half of the Premier League clash.
However, Liverpool’s poor defending underminded their impressive attacking display once again after Joselu equalised despite Joel Matip’s desperate attempt to clear the ball.
Klopp’s side were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw with the Magpies as Liverpool dropped to seventh place in the Premier League table and seven points behind leaders Manchester City.
Manchester United are level on points with Pep Guardiola’s side and the Red Devils have scored 21 times in seven games ahead of their trip to Anfield on Saturday 14 October.
Liverpool will make the long trip to Tottenham Hotspur following the visit of Manchester United in two games that could define the Merseyside outfit’s season under Klopp.
Former Liverpool captain Souness believes the Reds need to improve their performance level in their next two games against their title rivals to inject some momentum into their campaign.
“The big challenge for Liverpool is the next two games. Manchester United at home, what that means to both sets of supporters is enormous – and they’ll have to do a lot better against United than they did [on Sunday],” Souness told Sky Sports.
“Liverpool have one win in seven games in all competitions – that’s not good enough.
“That’s not telling you this is a team that’s going to be challenging for the big trophies. It’s a slight worry.”
Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League campaign last season.
