Jamie Carragher: Liverpool FC need to be more defensive thinking like Rafael Benitez team

Jamie Carragher believes Jurgen Klopp needs to adopt more of a defensive approach to his Liverpool tactics like his predecessor Gerard Houllier and Rafael Benitez.

The Reds boss has come under pressure in recent weeks following Liverpool’s below par performances in the Premier League to leave the Merseyside outfit off the pace in the title race.

Liverpool failed to sign Southampton captain Virgil van Dijk in the summer transfer window despite the Netherlands international handing in a transfer request.

Klopp was forced to stick with Dejan Lovren, Ragnar Klavan and Joel Matip as his centre-halve options but the trio’s confidence appears to be lacking at the moment.

Liverpool had conceded 12 times in seven games in the Premier League this season ahead of the visit of Manchester United on Saturday afternoon.

Carragher was part of a formidable Liverpool defence under Houllier and Benitez before calling time on his career 12 months into Brendan Rodgers’ three-and-a-half year reign.

The former Liverpool star believes Klopp needs to build a formidable defence capable of digging deep and defending their goal at all costs.

“I played in teams under Houllier and Benitez who were a lot more defensive thinking,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“We weren’t as good on the eye as this Liverpool team.

“You’d have in your mind that you’re going away from home and you’re coming with a clean sheet.

“You’d be always switched on defending.”

Liverpool secured a fourth-place finish in their first full season under Klopp to book their place in the Champions League.

The Reds signed four players in the summer transfer window but Hull City’s Andy Robertson was the only defensive recruitment in an £8m deal.
