Jamie Carragher: This Liverpool FC signing should be a priority
The Liverpool legend questions why Jurgen Klopp didn't sign a top goalkeeper in the summer
Jamie Carragher believes signing a new goalkeeper should have been Liverpool’s priority in the summer transfer window.
The Reds were heavily linked with a move to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk in the summer but Liverpool were unable to get a deal over the line for the Netherlands centre-half.
The Merseyside outfit have been regularly encouraged to sign a top-class defender to improve their back four given Liverpool’s susceptibility at the back under Klopp.
Liverpool signed AS Roma winger Mohamed Salah, Chelsea teenager Dominic Solanke, Hull City left-back Andy Robertson and Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the summer.
The Reds have conceded 15 goals in five games on the road to raise questions about Liverpool’s goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and the rest of his defence.
The Belgian has remained Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper in the Premier League, while his understudy Loris Karius has proven just as unreliable as his rival.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher clearly felt that the Reds should have made signing a capable goalkeeper a priority in the summer transfer window.
One Twitter user tweeted at Carragher with the following message:
“Centre back and left back should have been priority before the season started.”
Carrager’s simple response to the tweet read:
Liverpool have conceded 16 times in nine Premier League games to leave the Reds in ninth place in the table.
