Garth Crooks has branded Liverpool’s defending as “frightening” following Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Newcastle United.

The Reds have only managed to win one of their last seven games in all competitions to raise questions about Jurgen Klopp and his Liverpool defence.

Indeed, the Merseyside outfit have conceded 12 times in seven games in the 2017-18 Premier League season so far.

Liverpool were heavily linked with a move to sign Southampton club captain Virgil van Dijk in the summer transfer window.

However, the Saints refused to sell the Netherlands international to sell Van Dijk to Liverpool despite the defender’s reported eagerness to move to Anfield.

Klopp failed to sign a second-choice target to leave the Liverpool boss with Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and Ragnar Klavan for the 2017-18 campaign – until January at the earliest.

Former Spurs forward Crooks isn’t impressed with Liverpool’s defending following another defensive lapse at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.

“What is wrong with Liverpool?” Crooks told BBC Sport.

“The Reds should have smashed Newcastle out of sight, but instead they limp away from St James’ Park with a point. Are they over-reliant on Philippe Coutinho? Since his return to first-team duties, the Brazilian attacking midfielder been absolutely wonderful.

“I’ve been banging on about Liverpool’s defence for 12 months and nothing has been done about it. Jonjo Shelvey drove a ball through Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren with such ease for Newcastle’s equaliser it was frightening. You could have driven a coach and horse through the gap between Liverpool’s defenders, it was so wide.”

Lovren and Matip were caught by Jonjo Shelvey’s pass as Joselu cancelled out Philippe Coutinho’s brilliant opener in the Premier League clash.

Liverpool signed four players in the summer transfer window but the Merseyside outfit only signed one defender – Hull City’s Andy Robertson.
