Graeme Souness: Jurgen Klopp needs top four to secure Liverpool FC signings
The Liverpool FC legend stresses the importance of the Reds finishing in the top four this season
Graeme Souness has warned Liverpool that Jurgen Klopp’s side can’t afford to finish outside the top four this season.
The Merseyside outfit ended up in fourth place last term to secure a return to the Champions League following a two-season absence.
The Reds signed AS Roma winger Mohamed Salah, Chelsea teenager Dominic Solanke, Hull City defender Andy Robertson and Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the summer transfer window.
Liverpool missed out on signing Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in the summer transfer window, while RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita will move to Anfield in a £48m deal in 2018.
The Merseyside outfit have made a disappointing start to the season after Sunday’s 4-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley left Liverpool in fourth place in the table.
Former Liverpool captain Souness warned the 18-time English champions that finishing in fourth place is a must for Klopp to give the German coach more pulling power in the summer transfer window.
“I think he would take top four right now,” Souness told Sky Sports.
“I think he must be worried in case that’s what it takes to get Van Dijk or someone else at Christmas.”
Liverpool haven’t won the Premier League title but finished in second place in the Premier League table in 2002, 2009 and 2014.
The Reds haven’t won a Premier League game in their last three outings following stalemates with Newcastle United and Manchester United before a 4-1 loss to Spurs.
