Jamie Carragher has urged Jurgen Klopp to start Philippe Coutinho in a deeper position in the Liverpool side.

The Merseyside outfit were unable to notch up successive Premier League victories for the first time since August following a 1-1 draw at Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.

Coutinho broke the deadlock with a superb long-range attempt to capitalise on Liverpool’s dominant start to the Premier League clash.

The 25-year-old’s brilliant goal was cancelled out by Joselu seven minute later when the Spanish striker was helped by some hapless Liverpool defending.

Coutinho has already scored three goals in his last three Premier League games to leave his mark on Klopp’s side despite missing the opening six weeks of the campaign.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher believes Klopp should continue to use Coutinho in a deeper role alongside Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum in midfield.

“I think he’s got the most goals from outside the box since he came to the Premier League,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“He started in a deeper position and this is where I think he can affect the game even more, rather than being part of that front three. What a strike – and how many times have we seen him do that.

“It’s the low centre of gravity, you know he’s going to cut inside but it’s so difficult to stop.”

Coutinho scored 13 goals and made seven assists in 31 appearances in the Premier League last season to help Liverpool secure a return to the Champions League.

The Reds fended off interest from La Liga giants Barcelona in the summer transfer window as the Spanish giants made a reported three attempts to sign the Liverpool number 10.

Liverpool signed Coutinho in an £8.5m deal from Inter Milan in 2013.
