Phil Neville has told Jurgen Klopp that Liverpool are nowhere near challenging for the Premier League title this season.

The Reds ended up in fourth place in the table last term to highlight their progress under the German coach in his first full campaign at Anfield.

Liverpool signed four players in the summer transfer window following the additions of AS Roma winger Mohamed Salah, Chelsea teenager Dominic Solanke, Hull City defender Andy Robertson and Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The Merseyside outfit have only managed to three of their opening eight games following four stalemates to leave Liverpool nine points adrift of current leaders Manchester City.

The Reds will make the trip to third-placed Tottenham Hotspur in their next Premier League on Sunday afternoon following last weekend’s 0-0 draw with Manchester United.

Former Manchester United defender Neville ruled out Liverpool challenging for the Premier League title this season or in the near future given Klopp’s underwhelming squad.

“Liverpool haven’t progressed from two or four years ago. They’re nowhere near challenging for the title,” Neville told Sky Sports.

Liverpool have never won the Premier League title but finished in second place in 2002, 2009 and 2014.

The Reds appointed Klopp as their new manager in October 2015 after the former Borussia Dortmund coach replaced Brendan Rodgers in the Anfield hot seat.
