Jamie Carragher has lavished praise on Philippe Coutinho and questioned where Liverpool would be without him this season.

The Brazilian attacker once again showed his class for the Merseyside outfit on Sunday when he scored a superb long-range goal during Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

Coutinho’s future was a relentless source of speculation throughout the summer transfer window as he was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona.

However, the Reds refused to sell and opted to keep the 25-year-old at the club beyond the summer window.

Coutinho has now been reintegrated back into Jurgen Klopp’s team and he has been proving his worth in recent games, scoring three goals and making one assist in all competitions.

And Liverpool legend Carragher has admitted that the Reds are lucky to have the 25-year-old in top form for them this season.

Speaking on Sky Sports after Sunday’s draw with Newcastle, Carragher said: “He does it a lot [score from distance]. I think that’s why he gets so many goals.

“Sometimes he can be frustrating because maybe it’s a bit too far out but as soon as he gets within 25 yards, the trigger’s getting pulled.

“Even though it’s only four or five games since he’s come back… it’s all about your performances and he has been brilliant in these last four or five games. Where would Liverpool be without him?”

Liverpool will aim to get back to winning ways in the Premier League when they host bitter local rivals Manchester United at Anfield after the international break on Saturday 14 October.

The Reds are currently seven points behind leaders Manchester City as they look to try and better their fourth-placed finish in the Premier League last season.
