Jurgen Klopp has challenged his Liverpool players to now show the consistency needed to mount a Premier League title challenge after a stuttering start to the season.

Klopp watched his side pick up just their fourth Premier League victory over the season on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 win over Huddersfield Town at Anfield.

The win was a welcome one for the Reds, who have struggled to find consistent form this season despite having picked up positive wins against the likes of Arsenal.

Liverpool are currently 12 points behind leaders Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title.

And Klopp now wants his side to show the consistency they need to be able to challenge for the title this term.

Speaking to Liverpool’s website, Klopp said: “Top of the table was a wonderful moment, we played wonderful football – and we’ve played sometimes wonderful football this season too. But we need to be lucky too.

“We haven’t had too much luck so far, that’s the truth. But you cannot ask for luck. You cannot say, ‘Where’s the luck?’ You have to work until the luck happens. Today it clicked.

“Yes, we were ahead of schedule [going top] – that is clear. But everything could have happened from this point: no injuries, bah, bah, bah.

“We are able to perform on the highest level. But now we have to find consistency.”

Liverpool return to Champions League action on Wednesday night when they take on Maribor at Anfield.

The Reds are aiming to book their place in the last 16 of Europe’s elite club competition.

Liverpool finished fourth in the Premier League last season under Klopp as they secured Champions League qualification in the German coach’s first full campaign in charge.

The Reds return to Premier League action next weekend when they travel to east London to take on West Ham United.
