Liverpool FC sent blunt warning ahead of Man United showdown
Jermaine Jenas discusses what Liverpool FC must improve ahead of Saturday's clash with Manchester United
Jermaine Jenas has warned Liverpool that they will need to step their defensive game up quickly ahead of their crunch clash with Manchester United in the Premier League next weekend.
The Reds have made a poor start to the Premier League season under Jurgen Klopp, winning just three of their opening seven games to leave them seventh in the table.
Liverpool have earned plenty of praise for their free-flowing attacking displays this season but their defending has left a lot to be desired.
Klopp’s side have conceded 12 goals so far this season, which is more than any of the team above them in the table.
And former midfielder Jenas has warned the Reds that they will need to improve their defending quickly as they prepare to take on Manchester United at Anfield on Saturday lunchtime.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, Jenas said: “It’s serious because of the amount of time he [Klopp] has had to change things.
“They’re so flamboyant. They can score against anyone. But their naivety is amateurish at times. Basic fundamentals are costing them.
“The thing that stands out is the period of time we’ve been spending talking about the same thing.”
Liverpool are looking to challenge for the Premier League title this season after they finished in fourth place in the table last term.
The Reds are also looking to progress through to the last 16 of the Champions League, but Klopp’s men have so far only drawn both of their opening group games in Europe’s elite club competition.
