Michael Owen has admitted that he is not sure that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be able to hold down a regular starting spot in the Liverpool team this season.

The 24-year-old is getting used to life at Anfield after opting to leave Arsenal to sign for the Merseyside outfit back on transfer deadline day in August.

However, Oxlade-Chamberlain has been struggling to get into the starting line-up in Jurgen Klopp’s team and he has only made one start in all competitions for the Reds so far this season.

He came off the bench to score his first goal for Liverpool in their impressive 7-0 thrashing of Maribor in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

However, former Liverpool striker Owen is doubtful about whether Oxlade-Chamberlain will be able to hold down a regular starting spot at the club in the weeks and months to come.

Speaking to BT Sport on Tuesday, Owen said: “It’s not easy for the Ox. How do you get in ahead of Salah, Coutinho and Firmino?

“He is an attacking midfield player. I know he has played in a central midfield role before. How does he get in?

“He has to be better than the others. I’m not sure he is better than Salah, Coutinho, Firmino, Lallana or Mane.”

Liverpool return to Premier League action this weekend with a tricky trip to Wembley to take on Tottenham Hotspur.

The Reds are aiming to get back to winning ways after they were held to a goalless draw by Manchester United last weekend to leave them nine points behind leaders Manchester City after eight games.
