Liverpool FC signing told he’s lucky to play for England at all

Paul Merson has claimed that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is lucky to play for England because the Liverpool midfielder wouldn’t have got into the Three Lions team in years gone by.

The 24-year-old midfielder opted to leave Arsenal to sign for Liverpool back in August after he made it clear that he wanted to quit The Emirates.

Oxlade-Chamberlain presumably was hoping to force his way straight into the first team at Anfield but his opportunities have been restricted so far, with the midfielder having not yet started a game for the Reds in the Premier League.

The former Arsenal star featured from the start for England in the 1-0 victory over Slovenia on Thursday night before being replaced by Jesse Lingard in the 64th minute at Wembley.

And Merson reckons that Oxlade-Chamberlain wouldn’t have had a chance to start for England in previous years.

Speaking to Sky Sports before the game, Merson said:”You look in midfield and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be very fortunate to play.

“In my day and age he wouldn’t even be in the squad.

“That’s the problem now, the squad virtually picks itself. There’s not a huge amount of depth and it is harder to get out of the squad than it is to get in it.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain will be hoping to start for Liverpool when the Reds return to Premier League action next weekend with a crunch clash against Manchester United at Anfield.

Liverpool are aiming to get back to winning ways after having won just one of their last seven games in all competitions to leave them seven points off leaders Manchester City.
