The Liverpool legend insists he isn't somehow complicit with the Reds signing Dejan Lovren

Jamie Carragher has distanced himself from the suggestion that he played a small role in Liverpool signing Dejan Lovren.

The Croatia international has made a disappointing start to the 2017-18 Premier League season as Liverpool continue to leak goals despite having the summer to iron out issues at the back.

Lovren reached his nadir at Wembley on Sunday evening when Jurgen Klopp put the centre-half out of his misery after just 32 minutes when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain replaced the ex Lyon man.

The 28-year-old was at fault for Harry Kane’s opening goal before he made another mistake in the lead up to Son Heung-min’s close-range finish at the home of English football.

Liverpool signed Lovren in a £25m deal from Southampton in the 2014 summer transfer window during Brendan Rodgers’ spell in charge at Anfield.

Lovren was praised for an outstanding 2013-14 season at St Mary’s after he forged a brilliant partnership with Jose Fonte in his debut Premier League campaign following a move to Southampton from Lyon 12 months earlier.

However, Liverpool legend Carragher has emphatically denied that he was somehow complicit in signing Lovren from Southampton.

Carragher wrote on Twitter when one Twitter user asked if he recommended Lovren to Liverpool:

“Where has this come from? I get tweeted this all the time! I did a piece on him on MNF when he was outstanding at Old Trafford for Soton!!”

Liverpool rewarded Lovren with a new £100,000-a-week contract earlier this year after the Croatian has enjoyed spells of decent form under Rodgers’ successor Jurgen Klopp despite failing to convince in his three seasons at Anfield.
