Gary Neville: Liverpool FC need world-class signing in key position (not centre-half)
Man United legend Gary Neville believes Liverpool FC should sign a great goalkeeper to build foundations of a title-winning team
Gary Neville believes Liverpool need to sign a great goalkeeper to lay down the foundations for a potential title-winning team.
The Reds lost 4-1 to Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on Sunday afternoon following goals from Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Son Heung-Min in the top-six clash.
Liverpool have already conceded 16 times in their opening nine games in the Premier League to raise serious questions about Jurgen Klopp’s leaky defence.
The former Borussia Dortmund boss has persisted with Simon Mignolet in goal despite his inconsistent performances since moving to Anfield from Sunderland in 2013.
Klopp signed Germany Under-21 goalkeeper Loris Karius to challenge Mignolet for a starting spot but the Liverpool number one looks like a poor signing so far.
The Reds haven’t had the luxury of a world-class goalkeeper since Spain international Pepe Reina but Brendan Rodgers made the bizarre decision to replace the former Villarreal goalkeeper with Mignolet.
Former Manchester United defender Neville believes Liverpool need to sign a top-class goalkeeper to lay down the first building blocks of a potential title-winning team.
“I genuinely believe you need a great goalkeeper to win the league and Liverpool can’t win a league with that defence,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“We can say that Man United, Man City, Chelsea have spent more money – it’s tough to win the league – but in these last few years, they could have won a title and it’s the defending that has cost them. Liverpool Football Club with its history needs to win a title.”
Mignolet moved to Liverpool in a £9m deal from Sunderland in the 2013 summer transfer window.
The Reds signed four players in the summer transfer window.
