Graeme Souness says Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is paying the price for not signing an alternative to Virgil van Dijk in the summer transfer window.

The Reds were linked with a move to sign the Netherlands international in the summer transfer window but the Merseyside outfit were unable to get a deal over the line.

Liverpool were forced to issue an apology to Southampton about their pursuit of the 26-year-old defender, even though the former Celtic defender handed in a transfer request.

Klopp failed to sign a second-choice or third-choice target at centre-half to leave Liverpool with Dejan Lovren, Ragnar Klavan and Joel Matip as their options at the back.

Liverpool have conceded 15 times in five games in the Premier League on the road to leave the Reds in big trouble in the top-four race.

Former Reds captain Souness questioned why Klopp didn’t sign a defender even in the summer instead of going all in for Southampton club captain Van Dijk.

“He wanted Van Dijk. I agree with him,” Souness told Sky Sports.

“Van Dijk would improve anybody. He couldn’t get him. He decided to keep his powder dry. He could have gone out and got his second or third choice.

“He decided not to do it. It’s biting him the backside right now.”

Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last term to secure a return to the Champions League.

The Reds signed AS Roma winger Mohamed Salah, Chelsea teenager Dominic Solanke, Hull City defender Andy Robertson and Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
