Graeme Souness is optimistic Liverpool could still sign Southampton captain Virgil van Dijk in the January transfer window.

The Reds were heavily linked with a move to sign the 26-year-old centre-half in the summer but Liverpool were unable to conclude a deal for the highly-rated Netherlands international.

The Merseyside outfit were thought to be on the brink of reaching an agreement to sign Van Dijk after Klopp was rumoured to have met with the Dutch defender in Brighton.

However, Liverpool released a statement apologising to the Saints about their pursuit of Van Dijk and ending their interest after Southampton threatened to report the Reds for an alleged tapping up.

Van Dijk continued to be linked with Liverpool after the club’s statement and the former Celtic man also handed in a transfer request in an attempt to force through a move to Liverpool.

Liverpool have conceded 16 times in nine games in the Premier League this season to raise serious questions about their defensive problems under Klopp.

And Souness, who is a former manager for both Liverpool and Southampton, is hopeful that Van Dijk could still end up at Anfield in the January transfer window.

“The manager put all his eggs in one basket with Virgil van Dijk and I like him as a player, and if he had gone to Liverpool he could have made the difference,” Souness told Sky Sports.

“One player makes the difference in my opinion. Jurgen Klopp has kept his powder dry. As a manager, when you can’t get your first target do you go and spend on your second, third, fourth choice?

“For Liverpool supporters, they will be hoping they can get Van Dijk at Christmas time or beyond.”

Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last term but are currently in ninth spot.
