Virgil van Dijk has left the door open for a potential January transfer.

The Southampton club captain was linked with a move to Liverpool in the summer transfer window but a deal failed to materialise.

The Reds were thought to be closing in on a move to sign the 26-year-old despite Southampton’s insistance the centre-half isn’t for sale.

Liverpool were forced to issue an apology over the pursuit of Van Dijk after Southampton threatened to report the Reds for an illegal approach.

The 26-year-old continued to be linked with a potential move to Anfield despite Liverpool officially pulling out of the race to sign Van Dijk.

The Saints captain handed in a transfer request in an attempt to force through a summer move but the south coast club refused to be swayed.

Asked about his future during the Netherlands training camp on Tuesday, Southampton captain Van Dijk left the door open to a potential move in the January transfer window.

“I’m glad I’m fit again and I can give up 100 percent,” Van Dijk told Fox Sports.

“I’m not sorry for anything. Of course, I wanted to make a step up, but Southampton did not want me to sell me, but you’re a professional, so now I’ll give everything to the club.

“Halfway through the season, maybe we can see what’s possible.”

Liverpool could certainly do with a defender of Van Dijk’s quality in Jurgen Klopp’s team given their poor defensive performances so far this season.

The Reds signed four players in the summer transfer window.
