Ex-striker questions Jurgen Klopp about Liverpool FC’s failure to make key signing
The Arsenal legend can't understand why Liverpool FC missed out on Virgil van Dijk in the summer
Jurgen Klopp is still facing questions about his transfer policy after Liverpool missed out on Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, Alan Smith has claimed.
The Netherlands international was heavily linked with a move to the Anfield outfit in the summer transfer window.
Liverpool were touted as favourites to sign Van Dijk before the Reds were forced to issue a statement apologising to Southampton over their pursuit of the 26-year-old centre-half.
The Reds officially ended their interest in the Dutch centre-half but Liverpool continued to be linked with a potential swoop to sign Van Dijk.
Van Dijk even handed in a transfer request but Southampton refused to budge and their club captain remained at St Mary’s beyond the summer transfer window.
Liverpool have conceded 14 times in nine games in the Premier League this term to raise serious questions about their defence.
Former Arsenal striker Smith suggested that Liverpool boss Klopp has to answer some questions about missing out on Van Dijk.
“It’s the first time fans are asking questions of Klopp because of the Van Dijk saga,” Smith told Sky Sports.
“We know how the Virgil van Dijk saga ended up.
“Fans were asking if you can’t get him, why not get another? Klopp has questions to answer.”
Liverpool signed AS Roma winger Mohamed Salah, Chelsea teenager Dominic Solange, Hull City defender Andy Robertson and Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the summer transfer window.
The Reds signed four players in the summer transfer window.
