Robbie Savage has criticised Southampton for denying Virgil van Dijk a move to Liverpool this summer.

The Saints refused to sell the Netherlands international despite the centre-half attracting interest from some top clubs.

Indeed, Liverpool were heavily linked with a move to sign the 26-year-old defender at the start of the summer.

However, the Reds were forced to issue a statement apologising to Southampton over an alleged illegal approach.

Liverpool continued to be linked with Van Dijk and the Dutch star even handed in a transfer request to force through a move.

However, Southampton refused to alter their stance and Van Dijk remained at St Mary’s beyond the close of the transfer window.

Liverpool have signed Adam Lallana, Nathaniel Clyne, Sadio Mane and Dejan Lovren from the Saints over the past three or four seasons.

Ex Leicester midfielder Savage questioned why Southampton refused to allow Van Dijk his big-money move to Liverpool.

“If I was in Van Dijk’s situation and I’ve seen Lallana, Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Clyne and all these players move, I’d be like hang on a minute, they’ve all moved on to bigger and better things and got more money but I’m still here!” Savage told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last season.

The Reds signed four players in the summer transfer window.
