Thierry Henry tells Liverpool FC top 26-year-old reminds him of Arsenal legends
The Arsenal legend insists Virgil van Dijk would improve his Liverpool FC defence in the summer transfer window
Thierry Henry believes Liverpool target Virgil van Dijk is in the same mould as Arsenal legends Tony Adams and Sol Campbell.
The Merseyside outfit were heavily linked with a move to sign the Netherlands international in the summer transfer window.
Liverpool were forced to issue a statement apologising to Southampton for their pursuit of the 26-year-old defender.
The Reds continued to be linked with a move to sign the Dutch centre-half despite officially ending their interest in Van Dijk.
The Saints captain even handed in a transfer request at St Mary’s but Southampton refused to alter their stance on the defender.
Liverpool have already conceded 16 times in nine games in the Premier League this term after a 4-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.
Given Klopp’s defensive problems, Liverpool could require more signings than just Van Dijk to resolve their issues despite the Netherlands international’s obvious quality.
Former Arsenal striker Henry is adamant that Van Dijk would have an immediate impact on the Liverpool defence.
“I played with two players like that: Tony Adams and Sol Campbell,” Henry told Sky Sports.
“They were commanding. Would he [Van Dijk at Liverpool] change everything? No. But he would have a big impact on that defence.”
Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last season to secure a return to the Champions League after a two-season absence.
Van Dijk moved to Southampton from Celtic in a £10m deal in 2015.
