Kenny Dalglish is hoping Liverpool can improve upon their fourth-place finish this season, although the Reds legend admits finishing above Manchester United could be a tough ask.

The Reds ended up in fourth spot in the Premier League table last term to secure a long-awaited return to the Champions League following a two-season absence from Europe’s premier club competition.

Liverpool initially made a good start to the top-flight campaign following seven points from their opening three Premier League games to leave Jurgen Klopp’s men behind the two Manchester clubs.

The Merseyside outfit have only managed to win one of their last seven fixtures to leave Liverpool seven points adrift of the Premier League leaders.

Manchester United have collected 19 points from their opening seven games to keep pace with Manchester City at the top of the table.

Former Liverpool manager Dalglish is hoping that the Reds can finish in the Premier League’s top three despite increased competition amongst the top six.

“We [Liverpool] got close last year. We cannot get much closer than losing in a final, but I think the [big] picture will be the Premier League,” Dalglish told BetStars.

“They finished fourth so I think they’ll be expecting to finish a bit higher this year. United and City are both stronger this year than they were last year so that is a bit unfortunate.

“Chelsea got off to a bad start, losing their first game at home, but they’ve picked up and they’re strong and Tottenham are also looking strong.

“So it’s going to be a difficult task to get higher than fourth but hopefully they can do it and I think they’ve got the best person in charge to do that.”

Liverpool finished two spots above Manchester United in the Premier League last season to secure their spot in the Champions League.

However, the Red Devils managed to book their place in Europe’s premier club competition thanks to a 2-0 win against Ajax in the Europa League final.
