Jamie Carragher believes Daniel Sturridge needs to be more clinical if the Liverpool striker wants to rival Romelu Lukaku and Alvaro Morata as one of the Premier league’s top strikers.

The England international has found his first-team opportunities limited under Jurgen Klopp since the former Borussia Dortmund took over the reins from Brendan Rodgers in October 2015.

The Liverpool boss has used Sturridge sparingly with Roberto Firmino often being deployed in a false number nine role ahead of the England man.

But the Brazil international’s struggles in front of goal prompted Klopp to hand Sturridge a rare starting berth at Newcastle United.

The 28-year-old was unable to take a couple of chances at St James’ Park as Liverpool drew 1-1 with the Magpies in their last Premier League game before the international break.

Sturridge could be waiting a while for his second Premier League start of the 2017-18 season given his wasteful performance at Newcastle.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher, who played alongside the former Chelsea striker for six months at Anfield, criticised Sturridge for his prolifigacy.

“He has to score,” Carragher told Sky Sports. “We let strikers get away with a lot when they’re missing chances.

“It was a massive chance. If it was Kane, Lukaku or Morata, it was a goal and they’re coming away with three points.”

Liverpool signed Sturridge in a £12m deal from Chelsea in the 2013 January transfer window under Brendan Rodgers.

Sturrridge’s best return in a Liverpool shirt came in 2013-14 when he scored 21 goals in 27 games in the Premier League.
