Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool’s lack of success in the summer transfer has affected their performance in the Premier League this season.

The Reds endured a frustrating summer despite finishing in fourth place last season to secure a return to the Champions League.

Liverpool signed four players in the summer transfer window to bolster their squad ahead of their participation in Europe’s premier club competition.

The Merseyside outfit brought in AS Roma winger Mohamed Salah, Chelsea teenager Dominic Solanke, Hull City defender Andy Robertson and Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

However, Klopp was forced to wait another 12 months to bring in Naby Keita after Liverpool agreed a £48m deal to sign the midfielder from RB Leipzig next summer.

Liverpool were unable to reach an agreement with Southampton for their club captain Virgil van Dijk despite the Netherlands international’s eagerness to move to Anfield.

Former Reds defender Carragher believes Klopp is paying the price for failing to sign his two top targets in the 2017 summer transfer window.

“Liverpool’s transfer window didn’t go well. I still look at Liverpool and feel they didn’t fix the problems in the summer that needed fixing,” Carragher told Sky Sports. “That’s the big problem.

“I feel like every time I cover a Liverpool game I’m going to be saying the same things. It always goes back to what happened in the transfer window.”

Liverpool have never won the Premier League title but finished in second place in 2002, 2009 and 2014.

The Reds have played out stalemates with both Sevilla and Spartak Moscow in the Champions League this term.
