Frank Lampard: Philippe Coutinho on different level to Liverpool team-mates
The Chelsea legend believes Philippe Coutinho dictates the play for Liverpool ahead of their trip to Newcastle on Sunday
Frank Lampard says Philippe Coutinho can play at a different level to his Liverpool team-mates.
The Brazil international was heavily linked with a move to La Liga giants Barcelona in the summer transfer window but a deal failed to materialise as Liverpool refused to sell their prized asset.
Coutinho handed in a transfer request in an attempt to force the Merseyside outfit into reconsidering their position but the Reds held firm and refused to be talked into a transfer deal.
The South American missed Liverpool’s opening four Premier League games before his substitute appearance in a 1-1 draw with Burnley at Anfield.
Coutinho scored on his return to Liverpool’s starting line-up in the top flight with a brilliant free-kick in a 3-2 victory over Leicester City last weekend.
The South American backed up that performance with a superb goal in a 1-1 draw with Spartak Moscow in the Champions League on Tuesday night, although he couldn’t inspire a first win in the competition this term.
Former Chelsea midfielder Lampard lavished praise on Coutinho for his excellent performances already this season.
“Sometimes he plays a different game to everyone else,” Lampard told BT Sport.
“His pace of pass. His awareness to play the right ball for the right run.
“He was the hub for a lot of the great chances that Liverpool created.”
Coutinho scored 13 goals and made seven assists to help Liverpool qualify for the Champions League thanks to a fourth-place finish in the Premier League last term.
