Phil Thompson believes that Anthony Martial is now playing with a smile on his face at Manchester United after an impressive start to the season with the Red Devils.

The French striker struggled to hold down a regular spot in the first team at Old Trafford in Jose Mourinho’s first campaign at the club last term.

However, he has been more of a regular fixture in the first team this season and has started the season strongly, scoring five goals and making four assists in all competitions for the Red Devils.

Still, Martial has been limited to only one Premier League start this term and has featured five times from the bench for Mourinho’s men.

But former Liverpool star Thompson reckons that Mourinho is now starting to get the best out of the 21-year-old Frenchman and feels that he is now close to performing at his best again.

Speaking on Sky Sports News on Saturday, Thompson said: “I’m seeing Martial not just play as well but have a smile on his face, for what (the first time in) 12 months, 18 months.

“He has been absolutely terrific.”

Martial played the final 18 minutes of Manchester United’s 4-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

He’ll be hoping to feature for Mourinho’s side when they return to Premier League action after the international break with a crunch clash against Liverpool at Anfield.
