Rio Ferdinand believes that Marouane Fellaini’s work-rate and professionalism is the key to his recent success at Manchester United under Jose Mourinho.

The 29-year-old once again underlined his importance to the Red Devils on Saturday when he scored twice in his side’s 4-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford in the Premier League.

Fellaini joined Manchester United from Everton as David Moyes’ first signing back in 2013 and he has been working to force his way into the first team at Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho has regularly praised the Belgian midfielder for his performances since the Portuguese coach took charge at Old Trafford last summer.

And former Manchester United defender Ferdinand has lifted the lid on what he thinks is the key to Fellaini’s recent success at the club.

Speaking on BT Sport on Saturday night, Ferdinand said: “His improvement is down to hard work.

“He joined the club when I was still there and I played with him for a year.

“Whether it was going good or bad, he was in the gym or outside training, putting in the extra hours – and he’s getting those rewards now.”

Manchester United return to Premier League action after the international break with a crunch clash against local rivals Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday 14 October.

The Red Devils are currently second in the table and level on points with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side after seven games of the new campaign.

Manchester United have not won the title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final campaign in charge in the 2012-13 season.
