The Spanish shot-stopper has earned a reputation as one of the world’s finest goalkeepers since breaking into the first team at Old Trafford following his move from Atletico Madrid back in 2011.
De Gea initially made a sluggish start to life at Old Trafford and made a number of high-profile errors but he has since improved to become Manchester United’s clear first choice between the posts.
The Spain international has been linked with a move to Real Madrid in recent seasons but he will be hoping to help Manchester United challenge for the Premier League title this term.
Liverpool legend Carragher has been extremely impressed by De Gea’s form for Manchester United in recent seasons and he has reluctantly admitted that he rates him as the best in the world right now.
Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Carragher said: “Unfortunately I am going to have to start with a Manchester United player [in my team of the season], who I actually think is the best keeper in the world at the moment.”
De Gea will come up against Carragher’s old team Liverpool on Saturday lunchtime when the Reds host Manchester United in the Premier League at Anfield.
Manchester United head into the game in fine form, having won six of their opening seven Premier League games.
