Michael Owen tells Man United where to play Anthony Martial
The Liverpool legend tells Manchester United to stick with using Anthony Martial in a left-wing role
Michael Owen believes Anthony Martial’s best position is on the left wing for Manchester United.
The France forward has made a brilliant start to the Premier League season following a return of three goals and two assists in six games in the Premier League.
The Manchester United forward has been embroiled in a competition with Marcus Rashford for a place on the left wing as Romelu Lukaku continues to impress in a centre-forward role.
The Red Devils signed the Belgian forward in a £75m deal from Everton in the summer transfer window and Lukaku has already scored seven times in seven Premier League games.
Martial started his Manchester United career in a central role under Louis van Gaal following his £36m move to Old Trafford from Ligue 1 side Monaco in 2015.
The France star scored 11 times in 49 games in his first season at Manchester United but struggled under Mourinho last term to prompt talk of a summer move to Serie A.
However, former Liverpool striker Owen believes Martial’s impressive early-season performances this term prove that the France star is best suited to a left-wing role.
“I like him on the left,” Owen told BT Sport.
“I’m not sure he is an intelligent enough runner to play central. He needs to go into different channels and run in different lines. I think from the left he is really good.”
Manchester United are sitting in second place in the Premier League table but level on points with leaders Manchester City.
