Ian Wright has accused Jose Mourinho of deflecting attention from Manchester United’s poor performance at Liverpool after the manager hinted at his interest in taking over at Paris Saint-Germain in the future.

The Red Devils adopted a negative approach for their trip to Anfield last weekend as Manchester United managed to tame the Liverpool attack in a dour goalless draw in the Premier League.

Mourinho’s men were criticised for failing to show any adventure despite scoring 21 times in their opening seven games and coming up against a poor Liverpool defence.

The Manchester United manager fuelled speculation about his future earlier this week when he confirmed that the Red Devils wouldn’t be his final club and dropped a hint about PSG.

Former Arsenal striker Wright believes Mourinho’s comments were a tactic to deflect from the negative talk surrounding Manchester United’s latest Premier League performance.

“The way they played the other day, he’s got to do something to reflect away from that performance,” Wright told Sky Sports.

“When you go into that realm you’re creating column inches and people will talk about that.

“You look at PSG, they’re probably the only ones left he might be able to go to with the fortunes they’ve got where he can go and try and win the Champions League with.”

Manchester United are in second place in the Premier League table and two points behind current leaders Manchester City.

The Red Devils signed Benfica defender Victor Lindelof, Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic and Everton striker Romelu Lukaku.

Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League last term but won the EFL Cup and the Europa League.
