Mark Lawrenson: Man United at crossroads in title race
The Liverpool legend warns Manchester United are at a crossroads in the 2017-18 season
Mark Lawrenson believes Manchester United are at a crossroads in the Premier League title race ahead of the visit of Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.
The Red Devils have lost ground in the Premier League title race in recent weeks following a disappointing return of one point from their last two top-flight outings.
The 20-time English champions scored 21 goals and six clean sheets in their opening seven games to remain level on points with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
Manchester United managed to tame Liverpool’s attack at Anfield earlier this month as Jose Mourinho adopted a conservative approach for their goalless draw on Merseyside.
The Red Devils failed to revert to their thrilling attacking play from the opening seven Premier League games when Manchester United made the trip to Huddersfield Town last weekend.
Former Liverpool defender Lawrenson suggested the visit of Tottenham could decide whether Manchester United will be title contenders or top-four contenders this season.
“This is a little bit of a crossroads game for United, more than it is for Spurs. Mourinho’s side made a really good start and had 20 points from their first eight games, including their draw at Anfield – which I thought was a decent result by the way,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.
Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season but won the League Cup and the Europa League in Mourinho’s first campaign in charge.
The Red Devils signed three players in the summer transfer window to bolster their squad ahead of the new season.
