Manchester United need produce a “moment of quality” in their upcoming games against their chief Premier League rivals, Gary Neville has warned.

The Red Devils have made a positive start to the Premier League season following a return of 20 points from their opening eight games.

Manchester United scored 21 times in their opening seven games ahead of last weekend’s trip to Liverpool.

Jose Mourinho adopted a negative approach to their Premier League game at Anfield and managed to contain the Liverpool attack in a goalless stalemate.

The Manchester United boss was criticised for showing a lack of adventure on Merseyside despite starting with Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial.

Manchester City were 1-0 winners against Chelsea in their last game before the international break thanks to Kevin De Bruyne’s winner.

The Citizens have also beaten Liverpool 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium and were 7-2 winners against Stoke City last weekend.

Former Manchester United defender Neville wants to see the Red Devils produce a similar moment of quality.

“There is a long way to go. The moment of quality,” Neville told his Sky Sports podcast.

“You think of Kevin De Bruyne’s goal at Chelsea. You turn it up from being a strong team to a great team.

“Man United have only had one game away from home against a top team. We will find out a lot more about Manchester United in the next few weeks. They play Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal.”

Manchester United lost 2-1 to promoted side Huddersfield Town on Saturday to bring to an end the Red Devils’ impressive unbeaten run.
