Steve Nicol has encouraged Luke Shaw to seek a transfer away from Manchester United for the good of his career.

The defender has struggled to hold down a regular spot in the first team at Old Trafford since Jose Mourinho’s appointment at the club back in the summer of 2016.

Shaw came on as a late substitute during Manchester United’s League Cup victory over Swansea City in midweek and he will be hoping to hold down a regular spot in Mourinho’s team in the coming weeks and months.

However, it remains to be seen whether the left-back will be able to win over Mourinho and earn a regular spot in the first team.

And Nicol believes that Shaw would be wise to seek a move away from Old Trafford to ensure that he is able to get the best out of his career.

Speaking to ESPN FC, Nicol said: “He needs to go, he needs to leave.

“Listen, as soon as your manager is annihilated you in the press the way he got annihilated, you can forget about it.

“He’s a good player but he’s wasting his time at Manchester United.”

In the meantime, Shaw will be hoping to be involved when Manchester United return to Premier League action on Saturday lunchtime with a crunch clash against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils head into that game looking to get back to winning ways in the top flight after their 2-1 loss to Huddersfield last weekend.
