Jose Mourinho heaped praise on Anthony Martial after the striker came off the bench to fire Manchester United to a 1-0 victory over Tottenham to get the Red Devils’ title bid back on track.

The forward came on and netted the winner in the 81st minute at Old Trafford to hand Mourinho’s men all three points as Martial netted for the fourth time as a substitute this season.

Martial has been in good form for Manchester United so far this season, having scored four goals and two assists in the Premier League.

And Mourinho has been delighted by Martial’s impact for the Red Devils in recent weeks.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Mourinho said: “Sometimes he starts the match and his contribution is good but he doesn’t score.

“I don’t understand some reactions when people question ‘are they Red Devils’? The two strikers were up against amazing central defenders. some of the best in Europe.

“Martial scores with a bad shot, but the bad shots can be the most beautiful.

“To play well against a very, very good team feels even better.”

Manchester United’s win lifted them up to second place in the table and two points behind leaders Manchester City, who face West Brom later on Saturday.

Mourinho is aiming to become the first manager to lead Manchester United to the Premier League title since their final triumph under Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2013.
