Jamie Carragher slams Liverpool’s defence after 1-1 draw at Newcastle

Jamie Carragher slammed Liverpool’s defence after Jurgen Klopp’s side failed to keep a clean sheet in a 1-1 draw at Newcastle United on Sunday.
The Merseyside outfit had conceded 11 times in six Premier League games ahead of their trip to St James’ Park in the final top-flight fixture of the weekend.
Liverpool made the breakthrough in the first half after Philippe Coutinho scored a superb goal to net in his third successive game in all competitions.
However, the Reds were unable to keep Newcastle out for longer than seven minutes despite dominating possession in the first half.
Jonjo Shelvey produced a defence-splitting pass to set Joselu free and Joel Matip’s last-ditch tackle rebounded off the Newcastle striker into the goal.
Liverpool had chances to add a second after half-time but Daniel Sturridge, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Dominic Solanke wasted chances to secure three points.
Former Reds defender Carragher was critical of Klopp’s back four for costing Liverpool more points in their bid to challenge for the Premier League title.
“A lack of concentration has cost Liverpool again,” Carragher told Sky Sports. “Whenever Liverpool concede chances, they’re always big chances – and that was exactly the same again.”
Klopp only signed one defender in the summer transfer window following the addition of Andy Robertson in an £8m deal from Hull City.
Liverpool are in seventh place in the Premier League table.
