Paul Merson believes Jose Mourinho would lead Arsenal to the Premier League title if the controversial manager was in charge at The Emirates.

The Gunners haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 when Arsene Wenger’s side managed to go unbeaten throughout the campaign.

Arsenal are the only Premier League team to have achieved that feat but the Gunners have been in decline since that title triumph.

While Wenger led Arsenal to a second-place finish in the 2015-16 season, Tottenham’s late collapse allowed their north London rivals to pip Mauricio Pochettino’s men but finished some distance behind champions Leicester City.

Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League last term to miss out on a Champions League spot for the first time since Wenger took over the reins in 1996.

Mourinho was available to hire between December 2015 and May 2016 when the Portuguese coach was sacked by Chelsea before Manchester United hired the ex-Real Madrid boss.

Former Arsenal legend Merson claimed that Mourinho would have led the Gunners to the Premier League title if he had been in charge of the north London club in recent seasons.

“If Mourinho was in charge of Arsenal, they’d win the league,” Merson told The Debate on Sky Sports.

“He sets them up not to lose and goes from there. Don’t lose and then build from that.”

Arsenal have won the FA Cup in three of the past four seasons.
